Props Artisan

Location: Scenic Design and Technology Works 120 Bet-Tech Drive, Aliquippa, PA 15001 or Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center, One Lincoln Park, Midland PA 15059

Reports to: Prop Master

Job Type: Part-Time (30 hours a week)

Starting Rate: $20.00/hour

Travel: Primary report location to the Scenic Design and Technology Works shop but will need to travel to Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center at various times for prop needs

Job Summary:

The Props Artisan is ultimately responsible for supporting the prop department in the creation and maintenance of all performance props and furniture pieces for the theater.  This position will consistently follow high standards of business and professional ethics when dealing with others and/or performing work activities.

Safety Responsibilities

Responsible for maintaining a safe work environment.  This includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Utilizing proper PPE at all time

  • Practicing safety precautions to reduce the risk of injury to self and others

  • Maintaining a clean and hazard-free workspace

  • Refraining from utilizing tools, chemicals, or other items if you are not properly trained to do so

  • Ensuring that all tools, supplies, and chemicals are stored properly

  • Maintaining a strong knowledge of and adhering to all safety protocol and procedures throughout the course of employment

Job Responsibilities:

  • Following direction of Prop Master, gather and organize all props and furniture pieces for each production

  • Maintain and properly care for props

  • Assist in inventoring all props and furniture pieces upon close of productions and rehearsals

  • Help ensure the smooth operation of prop procurement, prop use during rehearsals and productions, and the returning of props

  • Adheres to all safety protocol and procedures throughout the course of employment

  • Keeps immediate supervisor promptly and fully informed of all problems or unusual matters of significance

  • Accepts and performs other duties as assigned

  • Regular and predictable attendance, punctuality, and strict adherence to the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center attendance policy are essential functions of this position

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must posess an eye for detail

  • Paint and prop fabrication experience

  • Basic usage of power tools: including a table saw, other power saws, drills, etc.

  • Comfortable working with a variety of materials to fabricate unconvential props

  • Ability to multi-task and work within deadlines.  Must be able to adhere to established schedules.

  • Ability to remain calm and productive in difficult situations.

  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills. Excellent verbal communication skills are essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Upholstery experience

  • Welding experience

  • Cast and mold fabrication with either resin or metal a plus

  • Basic electrical knowledge to add lighting or small motors to props

  • Photoshop or other design program experience

Required Education:

  • High School Diploma Required

Preferred Education:

  • BA or BFA in Technical Theater or minimum of 3 years experience related experience

Required Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid Driver’s License

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work flexible schedule including occational weekends and evenings as determined by the season schedule.

  • There is frequent need to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, carry items, use the hands and fingers, climb stairs, balance, kneel, occasionally lift objects up to 50 pounds, and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday.

  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • An essential function of this position is the employee’s attendance and physical presence within the shop.

Responsibilities and time allocation may change over time to meet the needs of Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center and can include other duties as assigned.
